چکیده

This paper presents an exemplar-theoretic account of pitchaccent variability. Results from two experiments are reported. The first experiment examines variability / similarity across a range of pitch-accent contour types which vary in frequency of occurrence. The results report similar behaviour across the frequency bins and are indicative of pitch-accent immunity from frequency effects. The second experiment, in order to establish the impact of lexical frequency on pitch-accent production, examines the similarity of pitch-accent contours linked to high and low frequency syllables. The results indicate further autonomy on the part of pitch-accents and offer possible evidence for post-lexical pitch-accent generation.

Relative Frequency Affects Pitch Accent Realisation: Evidence for Exemplar Storage of Prosody

This paper looks at the variability of pitch accent realisations on different word types in relation to the relative frequency with which each word type occurs with a particular pitch accent type (among all pitch-accented occurrences of the word). Results indicate that pitch accent realisation variability decreases with increasing relative frequency. This is consistent with Exemplar Theory: rel...

Exemplar-based pitch accent categorisation using the generalized context model

This paper presents the results of a pitch accent categorisation simulation which attempts to classify L*H and H*L accents using a psychologically motivated exemplar-theoretic model of categorisation. Pitch accents are represented in terms of six linguistically meaningful parameters describing their shape. No additional information is employed in the categorisation process. The results indicate...

Identifying prosodic prominence patterns for English text-to-speech synthesis

This thesis proposes to improve and enrich the expressiveness of English Textto-Speech (TTS) synthesis by identifying and generating natural patterns of prosodic prominence. In most state-of-the-art TTS systems the prediction from text of prosodic prominence relations between words in an utterance relies on features that very loosely account for the combined effects of syntax, semantics, word i...

Japanese Pitch Accent in a Typological Perspective

Standard Tokyo Japanese has a rich pitch-accent system where multiple pitch patterns are differentiated from each other in terms of the presence/absence of an abrupt pitch fall as well as its position. However, this is only one type of system among the variety of pitch-accent systems found in the language. This paper looks at these pitch-accent systems from typological viewpoints, through a com...

Pitch accent variability in focus production and perception in Bulgarian declaratives

We investigated variability of pitch accents when it marks different focus types in the speech of young Bulgarians from Sofia. In the production experiment, we found interspeaker variability in the choice of pitch accents, and (!)H* as the predominant nuclear pitch accent in Broad Focus, which is different from the H+(!)H* or H+L* attested in earlier studies. We also found variable alignment of...
